MASS WASTING

The movement of rock, soil or both under the influence of gravity. may or may not be subjected to the influence of moisture/ water

Controlling factors of mass wasting :

1. lithology : of sedimentary rock, igneus rock and metamorphic rock (shale, argilite, poor cementation, cracks and joint : are the most susceptible)

2. geological structure : joints,fault, foliation,infill material and bedding (joint : width,density,orientation)

3. soil type : small grain size : lower angle of repose. large grain size and different shaped resulted higher angle of repose

4. slope angle : shear stress is higher than shear strength in steeper slope (gentle : younger slope)

5. slope curvature : cliff, rectilinear, concave and convex

6. anthropogenic : slope cutting, unplanned development

LANDSLIDES : FLOW, TOPPLING, FALL, SLIDE AND COMPLEX

OTHERS : Creep, Lateral Spread, Solifluction, Soil Liquefaction, Avalance and Subsidence
