KUPANG EARTHQUAKE (AUG 20, 2013)

The weak earthquake measuring  3.8 on the ritcher scale traced in Kupang near Baling Kedah at 8.26 am on Tuesday. The epicentre of the earthquake was 11km south of Baling which lies at the Kupang fault zone,  identical to the one in Bukit Tinggi. Geologist believe the cause of this tremor is because of  the activation of Bok Bak fault which started from North Perak up to Perlis

The weak earthquake however did not cause any damage or injuries. Several teachers and pupils of Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Bandar, Siong, near here felt the tremors of the mild earthquake.

Mineral and Geoscience Department, assistant director-general, Mohd Badzran Mat Taib said, the quake tremors may recur, but the risk or probability of it is low.

He said the Risks and Hazards of Earthquake and Tsunami Study in Malaysia, conducted and completed in 2009 by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, also showed that Peninsular Malaysia faced only a low risk, while Sabah and Sarawak were at a moderate risk.

Based on the Meteorological Department's records, there were eight earthquakes in Malaysia last year, with six of them in Sabah and Sarawak.
